The City of Trenton, TN Celebrates Recycling Success |
The city of Trenton, Tennessee recently celebrated a milestone in their recycling efforts. The citywide curbside recycling program began in late 2009 in conjunction with Doxicom Recycling. The city has successfully reduced its waste going to the landfill by 30%, earning its 2nd Greengooroo award. The total weight of trash diverted from the landfill to date is 748,000 pounds.
Mayor Tony Burriss spoke at the celebration and praised the efforts of citizens, city employees, city council members, volunteers, and Doxicom Recycling. Mayor Burriss knew that he wanted to a recycling program in Trenton, even prior to his election into office. He believes that even though the program is currently voluntary; future mandatory waste reduction may be enforced, and Trenton is already prepared and successful.
In attendance at the celebration was Councilman Hammonds who stated “I have been more than pleased from day one. Where we have come from; throwing trash in the ditch, to today, outstanding!” Also in attendance was Alderman Michael “Bubba” Abbott who showed his support by saying “It’s great, everyone is doing their duty to recycle. You can see it when you go up and down the streets; I am 100 percent behind it!”. His sentiments were echoed by the mayor who was very impressed to see so many “green bags” by the curb on recycling day; a testament to the citizens participation in the program.
The city of Trenton was the first municipality to become a Doxicom Recyclingcustomer. As we look into the future we hope all cities and towns follow the trend set by Trenton. When asked about receiving their 2nd Greengooroo for landfill reduction, Mayor Burriss’ final comments were that “it is very exciting to see the culmination of us working together with the citizens and I look forward to achieving our 3rd Greengooroo.”
